Prestito Della Liberazione
Dimensions: 20" (w) x 28" (h)
(Literal translation: Loan of the Liberation)
The renowned Italian poster artist Achille Luciano Mauzan
(1881-1952) created this Art Deco piece. The artist was skilled in a
variety of art forms such as engraving, sculpture, graphic
design and painting. He created over 2,000 posters of products,
events and wars during the Golden Era of Posters.
Mauzan designed many posters for the Italian war bonds during WWI in which
Italy was on the Allied side. In this one, a solemn-faced figure representing
Italy—winged and laurel-wreathed—holds out a sword to arms reaching towards it
in the ancient Roman oath-swearing ritual. On the banner in front is a quote from
Italy’s wartime leader Orsini referring to the return of ‘what was ours—conquered
Italian territory…and Italian pride.’
