Billy was a wild opossum the Hoover family adopted after he strayed onto the White House property. The family kept the opossum in a pen that had been built for the Coolidge family’s raccoon, Rebecca. In 1929, Billy became the subject of news coverage after Hoover lent him to a nearby high school after its mascot, also an opossum, had disappeared, according to the Library of Congress.

Students wrote a letter to the president, saying: "Having won successively the Prince George's County high school championships in soccer, basketball, track and baseball this year, we cannot fail to appreciate the value of this little animal as purveyor of good fortune."

Hoover replied: "I am glad to have your formal report on the efficiency of Billy Opossum- it will be incorporated into his service record. Precautions will be taken to maintain his health and spirits for the further needs of the Prince George's County high school teams."
