From the book's acknowledgments: Dear Reader, the family of Sergeant Isacc Woodard, Jr. would like to thank you for your purchase! The story is told in Sergeant Woodard's voice, as he shares his life experience leading up to February 12, 1946--a day that would change American history.

We also honor the legacy of President Harry S. Truman and his courageous act of July 26, 1948. With the stroke of a pen, he signed into law Executive Order 9981 integrating the United States Armed Forces. On July 26, 2023, the 75th Anniversary of the signing of Executive Order 9981, descendants from both the Truman and Woodard families (including Clifton Truman Daniel, grandson of President Truman) had an opportunity to meet and celebrate their legacies at the Truman Civil Rights Symposium held in Washington, D.C.
