Commissioned by the US Navy and created by Russell Mende of Landmark Products (a local Independence, MO company), this original coin commemorates the commissioning of the USS Harry S. Truman CVN-75 Nimitz-class aircraft carrier.

The beautifully designed piece has been encased in high-quality acrylic exclusively for the Buck Stops Here Store. The coin itself was presented to "dignitaries and [President Clinton] at the commissioning of the ship" in Norfolk, Virginia on July 25, 1998.

"I live in Independence, and I've always loved Mr. Truman. . . .I know people will hang on to these for years and years. [They] help to reconnect us with our gratitude and patriotism." Source: USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75)The Examiner, Saturday, August 1, 1998.

Russell Mende was honored with a plaque during the Special Recruit Company ceremony held in the Truman Library Courtyard. Captain Thomas G. Otterbein, first Commanding Officer of the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) and Congressman Ike Skelton (Missouri) were key speakers at the event.
