Texas Longhorn Bull

SKU E7125

About a generation before Dwight Eisenhower was born, Abilene was at the terminus of the Chisholm Trail and the likes of Tom Smith and Wild Bill Hickok were the lawmen that kept the peace. Ike grew up hearing exciting stories about those "Wild West" days and he developed a love for all things Western.

2017 is the Sesquicentennial year of the start of the Chisholm Trail. In 1867, Joseph G. McCoy built stockyards in Abilene, Kansas and encouraged Texas cattlemen to drive their herds there. From Abilene they shipped 35,000 head that first year and became the largest stockyards west of Kansas City, Kansas.

Most of the cattle that they drove north on the Chisholm Trial to Abilene were Texas Longhorns.

Ever since we first saw Safari, Ltd.’s collection of museum-quality figures at a trade show, we knew we had to find a way to make them part of our merchandise selection. Now that 2017 finds us in the midst of the Sesquicentennial Celebration of the Chisholm Trail, adding the Texas Longhorn Bull to our selection was an obvious choice.

Hardy and adaptable, the Texas Longhorn is unique among cattle breeds. These beef cattle spent hundreds of years left to their own devices, resulting in a breed that adapted perfectly to its environment without aid from farmers or ranchers.
